Between 2021 and 2022, INSPE Lille and Julian Alvarez have designed and produced a traveling exhibition entitled “Does the video game escape the question of gender?”. With a view to media education, the exhibition invites visitors to question the representations and imaginaries conveyed by video games in relation to questions of gender, identity and sexual orientation.
In concrete terms, the exhibition is made up of 15 posters, based on the principle of Figure 1: a central question, illustrated by a photograph related to the video game. This is accompanied by a text setting out facts and hypotheses. Each poster is an invitation to discover and analyze videogame products (consoles, controllers, covers, character packaging, etc.) and marketing positions dating from the 1970s to the present day. Do the different productions highlighted reflect gendered representations? If so, which ones? What are the contextual elements?
To gather feedback on most of the posters, visitors are invited to scan the QR codes to respond anonymously to the questions raised.
The aim of this proposal is firstly to offer a virtual tour of part of the exhibition, to help visitors discover representations linked to the history of videogames and the question of gender. Then, in a second phase, the aim is to gather participants' opinions on the associated issues. Then, in the third stage, some of the results will be presented and analyzed.
